Linked files & folders

Besides the notes in your vault, Znote can work with markdown files that live elsewhere on your disk — without copying them into the vault.

Use Link external folder… (tree actions menu) to mount any folder into the tree. Its files stay where they are; Znote reads and writes them in place.

  • Linked folders are not watched — use the Refresh linked folder button (or the toolbar Reload from disk button) to pick up external changes.
  • Root linked folders have a Show in explorer action.

Linked single files

Files opened individually from outside the vault (Cmd/Ctrl+O) are grouped under a synthetic Linked files node in the tree (link icon, italic). It only appears when such files exist.

  • Hover a linked file for a tooltip with its real path; each row has Show in explorer and Close actions.
  • The "external file" icon in lists marks files that really live outside the vault.

Moving a linked file into the vault

Drag-moving a linked external file into a vault folder asks for confirmation first — it physically relocates a file that lives outside the vault. Moves between vault folders stay silent.
